NATHANIEL J. BAKER is an American author and attorney. He has been writing fiction since the age of 10, when he was inspired first by Brian Jacques’s Redwall series and, later, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. He found particular attraction to The Silmarillion and Tolkien’s conception of a “legendarium”—the faux mythology created to serve as Tolkien’s invented origins of English history and culture—and has become specially interested in the prospect of crafting an American equivalent. His favorite novels of all time are Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Galatea by Madeline Miller.
In the realm of science fiction Nate is fond of the stories of Isaac Asimov, principally the Robot and Foundation novels: Found and Lost is intended as an homage to the early Seldon adventures. He is also a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune, which was one of the primary inspirations for Holbytla.
Nate is a graduate of Trinity College and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Classical Mythologies. His particular focus was on Greco-Roman history and literature, and the influence of both is prevalent in his approach to writing. He later received a law degree from the University of Minnesota, where he was one of the first recipients of the school’s International Law and Human Rights Concentration.
He has exactly zero awards or accolades worth mentioning.
